Ok well time to, as they say “put up or shut up” I have been a total knitting and crocheting SLACKER!! A hobby I once loved and obsessed over fell to the wayside when Derek was born. It has been 4 years since I have made anything…FOURS YEARS!!! Then came Sandy, or “Screw You Sandy”, as I like to refer to her. She ripped apart our worlds like a total nasty lunatic. She has left friends, family, neighbors and my hometown and shoretown in such a horrific state that if I try to talk about it….TEARS…FLOW….RAPIDLY!!!!
I decided I could unite some people, maybe gather up 50 or so hats and bring the to “my peoples” Bring them home to Staten Island. To the families that have lost EVERYTHING…EVERYTHING!!! I posted on facebook and asked if anyone was a graphic designer and my friend Jen hooked me up with Marianne who I never met but is a Staten Islander. Marianne made me a flyer that was just BEYOND my expectations. I started sharing it a little on facebook late Monday night and Tuesday Morning. Tuesday alone I had 671 hits to my blog post about it, about 100 emails and facebook messages and EVERYONE wanted to help. I mean EVERYONE….From Canada, to Israel, to The Netherlands, Orlando, Wisconsin, Iowa, California, Nevada AND SO MANY more places I can’t list them all. Eventually, I will. I will thanks everyone individually and I send you ALL virtual HUGS!!!
Tonight….I too, am picking up my needles
And then Staten Island…..I am coming home soon and I will bring with me a whole bunch of love from all over the world!!!!
Check out Spreading the Warmth, One Hat at a Time to see how you can help!!
Put up or shut up! Step up or step aside!
For us or against us!!!
OK, so perhaps their is a knitting tutorial on YouTube or something…
Oh Karla……..you starting to get the knitting itch??
My needles have been languishing in my closet. I love knitting in the fall and winter; my favorite project is making socks. I’m hoping to pull the needles out this weekend, go through my stash, and start on a hat. I miss knitting in the round!
I wish I could knit! But I will be definitely passing this on to friends that do!
Congrats on picking up those needles again! I LOVE KNITTING! You are going to love it this time more than the last for sure…and for such a great cause!
What an amazing way to help rebuild the areas that were hit by Sandy. I’m sure the recipients adore having something so nice and handmade to warm up. Kudos to you for thinking of a unique and useful way to offer your time to help!
My knitting & Crochet Group would like to send Hats for HatsforHurricane Please send me mailing information.
