Derek, I love you!! I love your smile, I love your infectious hysterical giggles and the way you want everyone around you to giggle too! I love watching you concentrate, focusing on building with your toys or playing for hours with your “guys” and saving the universe. I love how you love to dress up, when you stick your lightsaber in the side of your pants, put a butterfly net down the back of your shirt and run the backyard perimeter with a flashlight searching for lightening bugs. I love the way you won’t fall asleep without asking me to rub your back as you cling to your favorite lion under the blankie grandma made you. I love how you adore your sister, how you try to ease her when she is upset and how you willingly give up what you have in order to put her at ease with what she wants. I love how you ask your Daddy all about sports, how you sit next to him watching a game and ask 500 thousand questions over and over because you want to know everything. I love how chatty you are, how you can tell me so many amazing stories about everything you are learning. I love your fascination with hot lava and how it came out of volcanos and formed land. I love how you reteach me so many facts that I have forgotten. I love how you always pick mommy, no matter what…mommy! I love how you sleep in my bed everything night, I watch you as you sleep and make wishes for you and your future!
I know you will do amazing things in your lifetime. You, my son, WILL move mountains! You will be someone who does something about things and doesn’t just complain about them. I see it in you, your kindness and generosity is what will help you make a difference in the world. Derek, one day when you are too busy to kiss me goodbye and running off to school or to a ball game, just know…I LOVE YOU!! Wherever you are, no matter where you go, my heart is with you. I have been given the biggest gift the world can give, I have been given you as my child and I love you Derek!!
Site looks terrific. This musing is beautiful. I can substitute the name ryan for Derek as we have the same captivating child. Done, my mind has spoken 😉
AND they look alike too!!!!
So sweet! Putting thoughts like these into writing is such a gift to your loved ones. These days go by way too quickly and it’s just one of the ways to slow it down a bit 🙂 Thanks for the reminder!
Beautifully put, Sarah!
I love how amazing he sounds, and how amazing your love for him is 🙂
I like the idea of a love letter to your son. Children know things are real and important when they are written down, this is something your son can treasure forever.
Thanks Janeane! I read it to him this morning. He giggled and asked if he could go eat his breakfast now!
I love this Sarah! Beautiful.
What a touching tribute to a really great kid!
Can I tell you…this is the cutest idea. I still have the cards my dad gave me when I was a kid.
I have a son like this too… Mamas love their little boys!
