As part of a family that has been sewing handmade love for many generations, when I heard about ConKerr Cancer I was instantly intrigued. ConKerr Cancer collects handmade pillowcases for children with cancer while they are in the hospital. My own mother makes my children pillowcases for every single holiday and I know first hand the absolute joy and comfort children feel when they lay their heads to rest on a beautiful handmade pillowcase.
Each year 44,000 children across North America are treated for cancer while thousands more experience life-changing illnesses and injuries. A hospital stay is a frightening experience for adults, and even more so for young children. Beyond the obvious medical fears and difficulties, a sterile hospital room lacks the comfort and warmth of home.
ConKerr Cancer is an organization that makes, collects and distributes handmade, with love, pillowcases to children around the US battling cancer. These beautiful handmade pillowcases add just a dash of brightness and sunshine to an otherwise sterile-looking environment. ConKerr Cancer has delivered more than 850,000 pillowcases in just seven years to 250 hospitals throughout the country, creating ‘miles of pillowcase smiles’ for the children and their parents. In addition, ConKerr volunteers visit hospitals to sew with the children, breaking up the monotony of long, frightening hospital stays.
