Derek is starting Kindergarten AND his school is in the process of hiring a new Kindergarten teacher. Yes, the teacher still hasn’t been hired. I am taking deep breaths and staying positive and optimistic that they will find someone. Derek will go to private Kindergarten because our township is half day which is actually only 2 1/2 hours per day and then a bus to an after care facility and personally it’s just too much for me to take in so we are paying for private, full day, Kindergarten.
Recently I asked on my Facebook page for questions to ask when we meet Derek’s new teacher. I figured I can’t be the only mom out there that wants a list of questions to ask and so here is the list of questions that my Facebook page readers came up with!!
How long they would be expected to sit in circle time?
How to connect if I have questions or need to let the teacher know something?
How much outside time will the children have?
Will a teacher walk them to the bathroom?
Will a teacher or aide would walk my child to and from class from the bus?
What are your goals for reading?
Where do you expect kids to end up at the end of the year?
Is your approach play based?
What standards are you using?
How can I support at home?
What is expected for homework?
How can I participate as a parent?
Are there activities open to parent volunteers?
Is there a Kindergarten calendar or newsletter that keeps parents in the loop about activities?
Is the teacher First Aid or CPR Certified and if not how far from the classroom is someone that is?
Is there a snack provided or should I send one?
Do they have a set time to rest?
Talk about how your child learns, their personality, things that make them upset. Help the teacher know how to best teach your child
GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY!!!!
Thank you to Heather from Diapered Daze and Knights and Barb from A Life In Balance for adding questions!!!
Would you add something???? COMMENT BELOW!!!
This is great! I’m a year away but can’t stop thinking about it. My school district is half day also and I work so that doesn’t work for me. My day care is in another town and is an in-home day care so I don’t know how I’d even get my daughter back there, which is where my youngest will be. A lot to think about!!!
Awesome! I am so stressed about kindergarten. I keep checking the mailbox for bus info.
This is great info. My son is starting K in a week and a half (EEK!) and I cannot believe the lack of communication and information we have received. It makes me nervous! But I am just trying to put on my happy face for him & not let him know that LOL!
This is a great list! I would do the same thing if our area didn’t offer full day kindergarten. That is a lot of transportation time for little kids.
