One telltale sign of the Christmas Season starting in our house is the arrival of the The Great Big Christmas Book from Toys R Us. I have heard others refer to this book at “Free time for Mom Book” or “The Great Big Babysitter Book” and “Five Minutes for Mom Book” Basically it’s a book filled with the absolute hottest and most sought after toys of the seasons. Every year when The Great Big Christmas Book arrives I give Derek and Hayley a marker and tell them to circle whatever they want.
This sort of free reign over choosing toys can be very confusing and overwhelming to a little one like Hayley that likes to choose wisely. However, to a toy motivated, I want it all kind of kid like Derek, it’s like a feeding frenzy and rarely any toy goes unmarked.
My goal this year, in an effort to promote kindness and love among siblings, was to have Derek and Hayley circle what they wanted and then trade books. We decided to head to Toys R Us as a family to check out the Hasbro and NERF Ultimate Wish Saturday Event in-store. Then I would have Derek pick a gift for Hayley and vice versa. In theory that sounds fabulous but once we got there both kids were so excited that all they wanted to do was check out what they wanted and I decided that maybe I was expecting too much out of a 4 and 6 year old and let them check out what they each wanted!
Toys R Us was buzzing the moment we arrived. The parking lot was packed and when we got in there were balloons all over and staff at the door to direct us. I was seriously impressed at how smooth it was going because I was admittedly nervous about bringing the kids to a big toy event on a Saturday that I knew would be crowded. Our first table was Swipe Simon. Derek has been asking for this for months now. Santa has got to bring this or he will be VERY disappointed. Both Hayley and Derek had an opportunity to try Simon.
Our next stop was the Transformers table. Note that Derek looks disappointed when I told him he could not get the Transformer he is holding, Santa already has him packed away but I couldn’t tell Derek that!
Derek got to try out the Transformer that all you do is spin to transform. He loved it and so did I! Some of those Transformers he picks out you need a Ph.D. to transform.
Next we checked out the Doh Vinci table. The FurReal Friend Go Go Pup was also set up to play with but Hayley already has her (we have A LOT of toys!) The kids have been dying to get their hand on the Doh Vinci since they see all the commercials.
It was hard to get the kids away from the Doh Vinci table but the promises of Derek being able to get his first NERF/dart gun had him running quickly. Hayley then headed straight for her favorite aisle, the My Little Pony aisle.
Well we left Toys R Us with 2 boxes of new My Little Ponies, a Rebelle NERF gun for Hayley, a Toys R Us brand dart gun and then my husband went back an hour later and picked up ANOTHER NERF gun for Derek. We had a blast and really felt like Toys R Us did a great job on the event.
