In an effort to make our home “show-worthy” to sell it I have been whipping up new accessories on the daily. Our realtor told us to limit our personal photos around the house so potential owners could picture the house as theirs when walking through it but it left the whole house looking pretty bare and unwelcoming. That is when I decided to turn to my favorite craft groups on Facebook and check out ideas to add some pop to our now decluttered house.
I started with pillows. It’s incredible how new pillows and really just make a room. Our living room had old, tired pillow covers that I paid way too much for so I refused to get rid of them. Finally, I decided to trash those covers and use the fabric I bought at JoAnn Fabrics over a year ago, dusted off my sewing machine and made some new pillow covers with pocket back inserts so they slipped on easy. The gray and white gingham check pillow is a case from Ikea but can be purchased online at amazon along with the 20×20 inserts.
I wanted to make some pillows with messages on them so when people walked in to see our house they were told to feel at home, maybe that would make them listen and make an offer??!!! Worth a shot!!! I made this Home Sweet Home pillow with an Ikea solid white pillow cover and the 20×20 insert. I actually keep extras of these Ikea solid white pillow cover and inserts in my house at all times because they make great gifts!! I designed the text in my Silhouette software, used Siser Easy Weed HTV from my favorite place to by vinyl Pro World and cut it on my Silhouette Cameo 3.
The true test to be sure it all fit together was to see how fast Finnegan would try to get dog hair all over it and sure enough, within minutes, he popped up on the couch and got his hair all over the pillows!
When we bought our house the first thing I did was paint six inch striped on my bedroom wall. Both the same color just one matte and one glossy. After that we basically spent all our time and money getting everything else done in the house that we never did anything again. We have white Ikea furniture and an old pine headboard that I bought for $20 at the Pier 1 outlet as a temporary headboard about 12 years ago. First I painted the headboard with white chalk paint to give it a whole new life! Then I thought long and hard about what to put over the bed. I had a quilt that my mother made but it didn’t match and I was worried it wouldn’t pop enough in the photos of our house. I wanted to stick with the whites and grays to keep it neutral. I made what is called a Reverse Canvas. Basically I bought a large canvas, cut it off the frame, designed the text of what I wanted the image to say in my Silhouette software, used the Siser Easy Weed HTV from Pro World and cut it on my Silhouette Cameo 3. Then I stained the inside frame a gray tone, stretched the vinyl across the back of the frame and used a staple gun to put it back on. Blog post tutorial to come…
Next up….PILLOWS!!! This time I decided to get a little sentimental and used lyrics from our wedding song!!! I picked a font I loved, designed the text in my Silhouette software, used Siser Easy Weed HTV from my favorite place to by vinyl Pro World and cut it on my Silhouette Cameo 3.
